Piracy in Modern America

This is what I tell my audiences on ships: when leaving Baltimore, we pass by a nest of pirates just a few miles from our ship, up the Severn River and into Spa Creek. They hole out at the top of the hill and just like Pirates of 200 years ago, they rob from the working class and spread the loot among themselves and their friends. We call them the Maryland General Assembly.

A few more hours down the Bay on our journey out to the Atlantic, we pass by Point Lookout which marks the mighty Potomac. Up the Potomac River is another nation of pirates who do the same thing from a hilltop and we call them Congress.

As we travel further down the Chesapeake we passed the James River and located up that river on a hilltop called Richmond is another gang of Pirates who do the same to folks in Virginia and we also call them the Virginia General Assembly.

Piracy is alive and well within our borders.
